Aseismic strain episodes at Campi Flegrei Caldera, Italy

چکیده

Abstract. Since 2004 a research project has been developed to monitor subsurface deformation of Italian volcanoes using borehole strainmeters and long-baseline tiltmeters. Six Sacks-Evertson dilatometers were installed around Campi Flegrei caldera Vesuvius during 2004–2005 (Scarpa et al., 2007), in 2008 these instruments supplemented by two arrays 28–280 m long water-tube tiltmeters underground tunnels. Relevant strainmeter tiltmeter data have collected analysed from the near recent unrest episodes. In period strain, tilt GPS indicate onset surface that accompanied low rate vertical displacement continued 2006, corresponding an increase CO2 emission. This strain episode preceded microseismic activity few months, as was observed also significant inflation 1982. Other transient episodes occurred October which swarm VT (Volcano-Tectonic) LP (Long Period) events, 2009, at time renewed gas emission Solfatara, again March 2010, several minutes before seismic swarm. The scale events ranges some hours days, putting tight constraints on origin ground uplifts Flegrei. Their location is compatible with source inferred term signals, located about 4 km beneath Pozzuoli. A proposed mechanism for aseismic they are associated magma growth reservoirs occasional pressure relief leakage gas.

Progressive approach to eruption at Campi Flegrei caldera in southern Italy

Unrest at large calderas rarely ends in eruption, encouraging vulnerable communities to perceive emergency warnings of volcanic activity as false alarms. A classic example is the Campi Flegrei caldera in southern Italy, where three episodes of major uplift since 1950 have raised its central district by about 3 m without an eruption. Individual episodes have conventionally been treated as indepe...

Magma transfer at Campi Flegrei caldera (Italy) before the 1538 AD eruption

Calderas are collapse structures related to the emptying of magmatic reservoirs, often associated with large eruptions from long-lived magmatic systems. Understanding how magma is transferred from a magma reservoir to the surface before eruptions is a major challenge. Here we exploit the historical, archaeological and geological record of Campi Flegrei caldera to estimate the surface deformatio...

Hazard assessment during caldera unrest at the Campi Flegrei, Italy: a contribution from gravity–height gradients

Hazard assessment and risk mitigation at restless calderas is only possible with adequate geophysical monitoring. We show here how detailed long-term microgravity and deformation surveys may contribute to hazard assessment at the Campi Flegrei caldera (CFc) in Italy by evaluating gravity–height change (∆g/∆h) gradients obtained during ground inflation and deflation between 1981 and 2001. Such g...

Modeling surface deformation observed with synthetic aperture radar interferometry at Campi Flegrei caldera

Satellite radar interferometry of Campi Flegrei caldera, Italy, reveals a pattern of subsidence during the period !993-!998. !nterferograms panning the first half of the observation period (1993-1995) have a lower amplitude and average rate of subsidence than those spanning either the second half (1995-1998) or the entire period (1993-1998), consistent with observations of a slowing down or rev...
